About the role
The International Rescue Committee is seeking an Environmental Health Officer specialized in water quality to support its humanitarian programmes in Nigeria. The officer will lead daily implementation and monitoring of water quality interventions, ensuring safe drinking water for displaced and host communities.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee water quality monitoring across target sites, measuring Free Residual Chlorine, pH, turbidity and bacteriological parameters.
- Supervise chlorination of water sources and point‑of‑use treatment, ensuring correct dosing and community safety.
- Maintain testing logs, generate regular reports and advise programme decisions.
- Coordinate corrective actions for sites that fall below SPHERE and WHO standards and conduct re‑testing.
- Engage and mobilise communities to participate in water source management, monitoring and reporting.
- Ensure all water‑related infrastructure complies with humanitarian standards and contributes to reduced water‑borne disease risk.
Required profile
- Experience in water quality monitoring and treatment in humanitarian or development settings.
- Knowledge of SPHERE and WHO water safety standards.
- Ability to work closely with communities, local partners and programme teams.
- Strong reporting and documentation skills.
Required skills
- Water quality testing (FRC, pH, turbidity, bacteriological analysis).
- Chlorination and water treatment procedures.
- Data logging and report generation.
