About the role
The Ministry for Pacific Peoples is seeking a Deputy Secretary – Partnerships to lead national and regional engagement with Pacific communities. Based in Auckland, this senior executive role sits on the Executive Leadership Team and reports to the Secretary for Pacific Peoples, influencing government policy and service delivery through trusted relationships and culturally grounded collaboration.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the Ministry’s partnership and engagement functions across New Zealand.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with Pacific communities, iwi, NGOs and government agencies.
- Provide strategic advice to senior officials to ensure Pacific perspectives shape public‑sector decisions.
- Drive cross‑government collaboration on issues affecting Pacific peoples.
- Lead executive response during emergency events, ensuring culturally appropriate coordination.
- Champion the development of Pacific talent and future leaders within the public service.
Required profile
- Extensive senior leadership experience in complex, political public‑sector environments.
- Demonstrated credibility and established relationships with diverse Pacific communities.
- Proven ability to influence across systems, navigate complexity and align diverse stakeholders.
- Strong strategic thinking, judgement and risk‑management capabilities.
- Commitment to growing Pacific capability and inclusive leadership.
