Senior Transport Planner – Strategic Projects

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Transport Planner to lead transport outcomes for a range of New Zealand projects, from strategic regional plans to large‑scale investment cases. The role will operate as a smart client within the NZ Transport Agency, using a decision‑led approach to develop, appraise and deliver transport solutions that meet stakeholder expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and evaluate investment cases ranging from billion‑dollar programmes to minor interventions.
• Contribute to long‑term strategic transport plans that set regional priorities.
• Collaborate with local councils, government agencies and external consultants to shape plans and investment proposals.
• Provide technical transport‑planning expertise for plan change reviews and development applications across NZTA teams.
• Lead and review consultant deliverables, ensuring evidence‑based, compelling cases for investment.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a transport planner delivering investment cases, option development, appraisal and stakeholder engagement.
• Experience leading consultant activity and reviewing technical outputs.
• Strong ability to connect people and teams in a complex environment.
• Working knowledge of project development and investment‑case principles.
• Growth mindset with willingness to mentor and share knowledge.
