Legal Counsel – Payments (Singapore)

About the role
Alibaba International is expanding its legal team to support its fast‑growing financial and payment services across Southeast Asia. The Legal Counsel will be based in Singapore and will work closely with business units to ensure compliance and mitigate legal risk.
Key responsibilities
- Negotiate, draft, and review contracts and commercial agreements.
- Provide legal advice on business models, strategies, operations, marketing activities, and product offerings.
- Support applications for payment and financial licences.
- Establish and maintain the legal and compliance framework for payment‑related activities.
- Research local laws and regulations in foreign jurisdictions and manage external counsel.
- Develop in‑house legal tools, policies, and conduct training for business units.
Required profile
- Legal qualification to practice law, preferably in Singapore or the Philippines.
- 7+ years of post‑qualification experience at a leading law firm and/or corporation.
- Experience with e‑commerce or cross‑border trade transactions, especially payments and financing.
- Fluent in English and Chinese (ability to hold meetings and read/write in Chinese).
- Highly motivated, able to work independently under pressure in a start‑up environment.
- Strong commercial sense with a solid legal foundation.
- High integrity and collaborative mindset.
- Willingness to travel frequently within the region and to China when feasible.
