Leading Hand – Road Construction

About the role

Higgins is seeking a Leading Hand to join its Kopu Depot team supporting the NZTA Integrated Delivery Contract. You will work closely with the Supervisor, staying hands‑on in the field while guiding crews to deliver safe, tidy and consistent road and asset outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare work areas, materials and plant for daily planning.
• Perform hands‑on maintenance across road and asset sites.
• Operate plant and machinery, including excavators, with required authorisations.
• Guide crew members on safe work methods and task expectations.
• Assist with toolbox talks, pre‑start meetings and basic site reporting.
• Respond to incidents and after‑hours call‑outs when rostered.

Required profile

• 2‑3 years’ experience in road construction or maintenance.
• Proven experience operating an excavator in a civil or maintenance environment.
• Full Class 1 driver licence (higher classes and WTR advantageous).
• Strong knowledge of site safety, quality and environmental standards.
• Ability to communicate clearly and stay organised on busy sites.
