About the role

The Public Defence Service is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its North Shore office in Albany as a Senior Lawyer (PAL3). You will provide high‑quality defence for legally aided clients, manage a diverse caseload, and mentor junior lawyers.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients.
• Manage a varied caseload of criminal matters, including high‑profile cases.
• Appear in the High Court and Court of Appeals as required.
• Train, mentor and supervise junior lawyers.

Required profile

• Hold a PAL3 level listing and be qualified to practice law in New Zealand.
• Demonstrated credibility with judges, peers and the wider legal community.
• Team‑oriented, willing to share expertise and collaborate.
• Empathetic with the ability to relate to a wide range of people.
• Passionate about criminal justice issues.
