Head of Engineering

About the role

Renew is a nature data and intelligence startup building a platform that helps enterprises measure, value and restore nature. As Head of Engineering you will lead the early engineering team, own end‑to‑end delivery of core product features and set the technical direction as the company moves from MVP to a scalable platform.

Key responsibilities

• Own delivery of key product areas from feasibility, design, implementation to release and iteration.
• Stay hands‑on by writing and shipping critical code, especially in the early stages.
• Provide day‑to‑day technical leadership, set quality and efficiency standards, mentor engineers and unblock blockers.
• Collaborate with product, design and science teams to translate complex nature‑monitoring workflows into simple, user‑friendly software.
• Drive technical design decisions across frontend, backend and data pipelines, balancing performance, reliability and cost.
• Raise engineering quality through code reviews, testing discipline and pragmatic standards.
• Establish lightweight operating cadence with clear definitions of done, reliable releases and strong engineering hygiene.
• Improve platform foundations – performance, observability, security and cost awareness.
• Advise the CEO and leadership team on how engineering excellence can accelerate growth.

Required profile

• 7–10+ years of experience building and shipping production software in fast‑moving product environments.
• Proven ability to lead a small engineering team, set high technical standards and help engineers level up quickly.
• Comfort with ambiguity, making pragmatic trade‑offs while maintaining correctness.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for mission‑driven products that create measurable environmental impact.

Required skills

• Full‑stack development fundamentals: API design, data modelling, UI architecture.
• Performance optimisation, debugging and reliability engineering.
• Experience with code reviews, testing frameworks and engineering best practices.
• Ability to design and implement end‑to‑end data workflows.
