Country Director – Syria (National Position)

About the role

The Country Director is the Near East Foundation’s most senior representative in Syria, responsible for leading the organization’s programs, operations, partnerships, finance and risk management. Reporting to the COO, the role guides the transition from remote to in‑country management while ensuring compliance, safety and impact.

Key responsibilities

• Provide overall leadership of NEF’s program portfolio, ensuring relevance, quality and impact.
• Lead the strategic transition, aligning operational areas with evolving political and regulatory contexts.
• Ensure strict adherence to sanctions, donor requirements and NEF policies, overseeing vetting and due‑diligence processes.
• Navigate relationships with multiple authorities, representing NEF to government, donors, UN agencies and partners.
• Oversee operations, finance and risk management to maintain legal and reputational soundness.

Required profile

• Extensive senior leadership experience in complex, high‑risk environments.
• Strong judgment and ability to operate across fragmented governance structures.
• Willingness to travel regularly within Syria and periodically regionally/internationally.
• Open to nationals only, full‑time commitment.
