Chief Risk Officer

About the role

The Chief Risk Officer will lead an independent Risk Management function for the legal entity, ensuring that all risk types are identified, assessed, managed and reported. This senior role balances client and stakeholder interests while safeguarding the entity’s safety, soundness and ethical standards.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain the Risk Management Framework, including risk culture and emerging risk identification.
• Adopt a Combined Assurance approach and embed stress‑testing results into decision‑making.
• Develop and enforce risk policies, procedures and operating model capabilities aligned with group standards.
• Provide assurance to local, group and business‑unit leadership that policies and standards are adhered to.
• Monitor compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements and manage regulatory reporting.
• Coordinate with the Board on risk appetite setting and oversee remediation plans for risk breaches.
• Lead the development of the Risk Management people plan, identifying skill needs and driving talent development across the Africa region.
• Promote a transparent, accountable risk culture and support senior leaders in making informed, calculated decisions.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience leading risk management functions within a financial or regulated environment.
• Deep knowledge of all major risk categories, emerging risks and regulatory expectations.
• Strong track record of working with boards, senior leadership and cross‑functional teams.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and execute people and culture strategies.
• Excellent leadership, communication and change‑management capabilities.
